29 Faces for February

Well, now... Day 8!  I did a sketch for day 7, but didn't post it.  Have one for today too, so here they are, together.  Not particularly happy with either one, but neither am I miserable about them.  I can see the flaws.  Norrington's face should be longer, and perhaps Barbosa's face is a bit too long, especially the lower half.  I adore Geoffrey Rush's Captain Barbosa!  I believe I'll do him again, same or different scene/pose -- but in a different medium.  With the pencils, I just cannot get the blacks black enough!  There are deep shadows here, for dramatic effect.  Even if the proportions were exactly correct, the depth of value just falls short.  I have some new art items coming in the mail, assuming the storm doesn't hinder their progress.

Barbosa  has dined with Miss Elizabeth Swan, or at least she has dined.  He tells the story of the pirate medallion -- cursed Aztec Gold!  All pieces must be returned with the blood of the accursed crew who stole the gold.  He thinks she is the daughter of a deceased member of the crew: "That's why there'd be no sense in killin' ye -- YET!"

Commodore James Norrington, negotiating Captain Jack Sparrow's terms of detainment on his ship.  'You will then spend the rest of the voyage contemplating all possible meanings of the phrase, "silent as the grave."  Do I make myself clear?'

And now, what shall we throw in for an older one?  Lessee... how about....

Gandalf the Gray!  From LOTR, FotR, early  in the movie ... as he jests with Frodo in the horse-cart, approaching Bag End.   I love this pose of Gandalf!

February 6th -- 6th day of the 29  Faces Challenge!

I did another last night, and today finished one I had just blocked in then.   A couple of hours ago, I started something similar... yet different.  Changed gears, but only by changing movies -- away from Harry Potter for today, at least.  Had a hankerin' fer a pirate! heehee....

But for now.... here are two Harry Potter themed faces, both from HPOotP:

Prof. Dolores Jane Umbridge... about to lose her beloved control over her detested students.  She is known to shout "I WILL have order!"  But not when the Weasley twins are rebelling!

Remus Lupin, in my opinion, a tragic figure.  It is rare to find a happy shot of him, though small smiles happen.  This was from the Battle of the Ministry, Department of Mysteries.  We all grieve for the same loss, and for Harry, who has just broken away from Remus's protective, restraining hold.  Remus has failed to protect Harry... again.  It's about Harry, of course, but this one tiny shot is about Lupin, his whole struggle to do the right things, despite his own challenges.  I find it moving.

And now, for something completely different.  OK, somewhat different.  I just needed to change gears!  Love me some pirates!!!  So, this is CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow, from Pirates of the Caribbean, Curse of the Black Pearl.  I'll return to Harry sometime very soon.

Today's older face is a truly older face!  Done in mid-January, I think, here is the first Albus Dumbledore, from HPSS.  He has just explained to Harry how his mother's sacrifice has protected him.  It was "Love, Harry.   Love."

29 Faces for February

Well, it's day five!!!  I did an extra one last night, and one (so far) today.  Feel fairly good about both, though it's discouraging to try to translate very BLACK hair (on both of them) into a common pencil sketch.  Most of these are done with ordinary, cheap yellow pencils.  Bought a package at the grocery store (dog chewed on them one night, but that's another story, LOL!)

OK, here they are, plus one somewhat older piece, from January, below them:

Cho Chang, in a discussion with Harry, noticing the mistletoe growing magically over their heads.  HPOotP,

Sirius Black, Harry's godfather, having a 'serious' discussion with his godson. 
"Besides, the world isn't split into good people and Death Eaters.   We've all got light and dark inside of us.  What matters is the part we choose to act on.  That's who we really are."
In my opinion, this pretty much sums up the philosophy and message of the whole series.

29 Faces for February

Did yesterday's face sketch late, "finished" just before midnight.  Actually, I finished it today, but most of it was done yesterday.  Here is Dudley Dursley, the bully cousin, HPOotP.  He is taunting Harry about having a dead mother.  Nice kid, huh?

Did two sketches today, but not thrilled with either of them.  They are emotionally special, though -- The Weasleys share a sweet moment that shows the solidity of their marriage, and the solidly good influence they have on Harry's life.  This was an otherwise poor scene to select, as the lighting was awful to be able to discern feature structures.  (I know, excuses!)

The other one I did today was of Tonks, entertaining Ginny, and making her laugh.  Tonks can make her hair change colors, and her face change shapes!  I'll try to do more of Arthur, Molly, and Tonks, later.  Depends on suitable poses/closeups in the stills I find. 

And, last but not least, let's add a somewhat older sketch from January:

Madam Pomfrey, the school nurse.  Harry has just spit out some vile tasting medicine (Skele-Gro) and Madam Pomfrey says, "What did you expect?  Pumpkin juice?!!"  This is from HPCoS.

Continuing, day 2:  OK, well, I did an extra one yesterday, a re-do of the twins.  Finished only JUST before midnight, so I couldn't say it was from today.  The rest are today's work, though.  NOT fully happy with them, really, but not so upset as not to share.

 Fred (left) and George Weasley, just after Fred has secured a date for the Yule Ball with Angelina Johnson.  George seems to approve, or at least be amused about it.  This one is much better than the one I did previously.  That will NEVER be shown, LOL!

 Hermione Granger, having a serious discussion with Harry about the dangers of the TriWizard Tournament.  She thinks he's being too cavalier, when actually, he's kind of clueless.   Big difference.

 Cedric Diggory, telling Harry that the Prefects' bathroom on the fifth floor is not a bad place to take a bath.... DUH!  (OK, we know he's just being "subtle", but this makes him look like Captain Obvious, huh?)  One of the ones I'm not thrilled with.  I've done others of Cedric, usually better.

Victor Krumm, in a quiet moment of sadness, at the Memorial Service, near the end of the movie.  I think the proportions are off a bit.  His face is thick and wide, but not quite by this much.


OK, and one somewhat older drawing, from before the start of this challenge:

29 Faces for February

I think I might post one new face and one of the older ones, each day (until I run out of older ones, maybe?).  That is, until I get to the twenty-ninth that will have to go in on the 28th of February.  

So... for today, I sketched "Mad-Eye" Moody (Alistor Moody, the Auror and temporary Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts) and I feel fairly good about this one.  The somewhat older one (undated, but from a couple weeks ago, at the most) is of Dobby, the House Elf.  The first is from the movie, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," movie #4.   The other is from movie #2, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets."

I also tried sketching the Weasley twins today, but they came out HORRID.  I'll try again soon!

OK, they did not load in the order I said above.  Mad-eye and the Elf should be easy enough to keep straight, even for someone not familiar with the books or movies.  The difference between the bluish and the brownish has to do with flash or no flash to take a photo of the work.  Both are pencil sketches on the same type of white paper.  (8.5"x11" from the same sketchbook.  The pages all come loose now, by the time the sketch is finished.)
